Be Resilient Without Being Weak

Bloom in even the most rigid situation, photo by Christyl Rivers

At some point in our lives, we all face hard times. It has been said that when crisis or tragedy comes, we all feel the emotions we may never have formerly understood in others. Another common thought thrown about lightly from the all-knowing, weathered corners of life wisdom, is that “It is not what is in your past that makes you who you are, but what you do with what you have been given.” Both of these thoughts touch upon the importance of resilience.

We know, also, for example that we are to be more ‘like the willow than the oak’, to be flexible and bend with the sometimes, cruel wind that lashes us with indifference.

Life will be unfair. It is easy to become embittered.

But what do we really comprehend about resilience? How do we know for instance, that if someone we perceive to be fully bullying and unreasonable is pushing too hard? Should we take the flexible route; should we live and let live? Or we should stand up for justice and values, or fairness and compassion? It is at this point another tired cliché nags at us: we should choose our battles carefully. We should only put energy into those things for which the expressed energy produces hoped-for positive results.

This all gets pretty confusing pretty fast. Especially so, if we are disturbed and/or emotionally upset with ourselves and the other parties involved.

From my own life, I will offer an example of resilience that worked very well, but only in hindsight. It goes as follows:

The deal struck was five hundred dollars, $500.00, for the total cost of the repair. But he did not show up when he said he would. He purchased the wrong materials that my husband had specifically advised against. He then returned those materials and found the originally advised materials, but only three or four days later.

Having shown up at another time than which had been designated, we had machine roaring and pounding going on at all hours, even in the dark! When the weather turned bad, (heavy rain) he went and sat in his truck. When the rain eased off a bit, he went up on the wet roof and proceeded to work. This is something we found…
