8 Life Skills That Helped Me During the Pandemic

Saying that 2020 was rough is an understatement.

Millions of people have died due to COVID, cities are on lockdown, we can’t see most of our family and friends, the frontliners in the healthcare industry are driven to exhaustion, and entire countries have been brought to their knees.

2020 also brought plenty of financial difficulties. Businesses shut down, people lost their jobs, and countries like Norway had to open their wallets to help those in need.

This pandemic tested our life skills and how prepared we are financially. The rainy day for which we were saving our pennies has indeed come. As we move forward and try to live with this new normal, I realized that certain life skills can come in handy when life throws a financial curveball at you such as last year.

Obviously, these won’t make the problems go away, but they may be able to help us navigate such a turbulent period. Today is a good time to become more educated on the right life skills to be better prepared in case of another period of financial difficulty.

In March, my income was slashed by around 40%. My wife and I had to figure out which expenses we could cut in order to mitigate the effects of a reduced salary.

When the daycares reopened in April, we decided that my youngest daughter would only go from Tuesdays to Thursdays to save money. We also stopped sending our eldest daughter to after-school care. This meant one of us had to be home at all times to take care of the kids.

My wife works in the morning, 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, so I asked my boss to give me afternoon shifts instead so I could be home in the morning. Once my wife gets home, she takes her turn to watch the kids while I go to work. This saved us around $230 monthly. I also got to spend more time with my kids since I didn’t see them a lot when they spent too much time in school and daycare.

For writers, it’s understandable if they struggled during the pandemic (especially the ones that are just starting out) which is why it’s important to keep a positive mindset and to keep working while they figure out the right audience and niche and while building a loyal following.
