Who Follows

Today I met a traveler in the midst of quite the plight. I figured it would be a good idea to share her story with you, in case you might find something useful within the lines that I write. You seem to be of the receptive type. Shall I tell you the tale of the leader? Many have experienced this phenomenon in some form, but how many among us have received tutelage from it?

Who among you knows the role of the leader? To lead of course. Obvious perhaps, but every line written is done so meticulously, and for good reason I assure you. Search within the lines and the meaning will make itself known to you. This is the story of a woman who needed to do the same.

When she came into my view, I could tell that she was confident from her stride. An aura of strength radiated from her that was unmistakable. Not an ounce of fear in a single step, not a second guess of a single word once she finally spoke. We conversed at great length. It was a conversation that she led in dominant fashion. All admirable traits, but I ask you again; what is the role of the leader?

Imagine now a general giving orders to his troops. Imagine that he does so with confidence and vigor. Imagine he reprimands bad behavior and rewards the good. Imagine through his intellect and wisdom he commands his warriors in a way that leads to victory in war. Perhaps not in war, but in life, who among us strives to be like this dominant general? I would wager that most would. How unfortunate. How many would reject the mantle of the leader if only they knew what it truly meant to wear it?

For those of you seeking the true definition of leadership, I’m afraid I must confess the concrete answer escapes us both. I will tell you what I believe, however. Listen close now my friend. I believe that the answer lies in those who practice patience. In those that listen more than they speak. In those that work harder than those who follow. In those that show compassion. In those that stay their hand when they must but form a fist only when left with no choice. Read deeper into the lines and the meaning will become plain. I wonder if the woman that I met is among the leaders, or among the dominant.

Who among us knows the difference?
