From the web

To be a great writer, you need to read excellent writing. Come read the best I found this week!

To improve my writing, I’ve started curating and collecting articles from across the web, seeking only the best from a wide range of sources. I use Medium as well as many other sites to collect material.

Then I spend a couple of hours each day reading through. I highlight parts I like and, in the process, learn a lot. I go to some fantastic places and learn unexpected things I’ve never come across before.

I also save the best for you!

This is the second list. I did a similar collection last week.

This is both a fantastic story and beautifully told. It’s the life journey of professional Free diver Alenka Artnik. How she utilized difficult life experiences to grow into the best women’s free diver in the world. Not only are the words beautifully crafted, but the accompanying videos and stylistic presentation make this article feel like a journey to the depths.

Sample:

Sunken by grief, Alenka Artnik found herself alone on a bridge, contemplating suicide. Ten years later, she is the world’s greatest female freediver and getting stronger with each record-breaking plunge. How one woman emerged from mental health struggles to push the limits of the human body.”

Despite the subject matter, this article is anything but s*** It’s both amusing and fascinating. The article discusses the almost unimaginable value of human waste in feudal-era Japan due to the lack of useable land and the short supply of animal fertilizer.

There were gang wars just over the collection rights.

When I said I come across unexpected things I’ve never heard of before, this is the kind of thing I meant.

Sample:

Going to the bathroom at a friend’s house was an act of generosity. It was like leaving a gift.”
