Six incredibly easy tips to feel normal again.

Although social distancing is necessary, it might be difficult to stay grounded during this time. You may experience slothfulness while others start to feel they’ve hit a creative block. These experiences are completely normal and common during isolation.

Something important to remember, especially for the majority of us that are digitally occupied, is to not compare yourself to others during this downtime. With the amount of screen time on social media, #STAYHOME has allowed us to peek into close friends and acquaintance’s home lives. And although the movement is to encourage everyone to stay at home, you should not compare your quarantine productivity to others’.

With that being said, I’ve created a short and simple list of mindful practices that many of us take for granted without realizing how impactful they are. I try my best to abide by these daily techniques to root myself spiritually, mentally and physically.

It doesn’t have to be a ridiculously early time, but an hour that you feel is appropriate and healthy. Start at a comfortable time. If you wake up the next morning and feel you can wake up even earlier, go for it. Challenge yourself. You’ve got time — literally.

At that, avoid eating out when you can. You’ll rarely meet the person who prepares your food and you have no idea what energy they’re living with. But, you are in control of the energy you give. Add positivity to your homecooked meals. If the phrase “made with love” didn’t have significance before, it should now.

It’s easier to break a good habit than it is to start a great one. Whether you meditate, read, exercise, or, apply skincare, stretch, then journal — have a routine that makes you feel good inside and out. Create guidelines that you set for yourself that make you feel human. This can be done by anyone, whether you’re living alone or with housemates.

If you don’t tell yourself to do it, who will? A best friend of mine told me years ago, “Make your bed every morning. Because at the end of the day when you’re back in your room and you feel like you did absolutely nothing, you can at least say that you did that.” It blew my mind. Such a simple task brought me so much insight. Now every time I nonchalantly walk into my bedroom, I’m refreshed with a tidy environment and a decluttered mind.

If you live in an area with minimal sunlight, try your best to step outside for a little. I find being outside reconnects me with the world and others around me — an important reminder that you are surrounded by a community that isn’t much different than yourself. Oh, and don’t forget your sunscreen.

My last tip. Smell the soup, cool the soup. Breathwork is consciously controlling your ins and outs and improves mental, physical and emotional health. Breathwork goes hand-in-hand with meditation and yoga. You don’t need an instructor or any self-help app to assist your hindbrain in doing its primitive function. It’s a newer and very effective practice that again, anyone can do. If you find it really useful and want more practice, you might discover local group sessions in your community when more businesses open back up, hopefully soon.

Always pace yourself when you’re starting something new. Now more than ever, we should all practice mindfulness. When we better ourselves, we better each other. We should appreciate what we have in front of us and express gratitude where we can. Human beings tend to make things more complex then it needs to be. Productivity is not a race, but you will always win when you’re being mindful.
