Why conflict is good

There is a lot of discussion of the evils of conflict on teams. I would argue that lack of conflict makes a team completely ineffective and work very boring. After all, no one has all the answers and the best solutions often include a blend of disciplines and perspectives.

As a result, if there isn’t some dissension during the design process the ultimate product is going to be lacking in some way. During my last two design sprints there were times my teammates redirected me by expressing concern with my thinking and other times I helped changed the course of our project by voicing concern with our approach. This conflict led us to make wiser choices and created a much better prototype than any of us could have produced on our own.

Conflict can be bad when it is not managed well and differences of opinion become personal. As a result, it is important to learn how to present different viewpoints in non-threatening ways and not to internalize criticism. Both are challenging.

How are managers at your company being taught to foster and manage conflict to enhance product development?
