At Iqaluit Dental Clinic, we understand the importance of healthy gums, teeth, jaws, and other oral structures. Generally, your dentist will be able to help treat a variety of problems associated with your gums, jaws, and teeth to restore their proper function. However, they might refer you to an oral surgeon or a maxillofacial surgeon when appropriate. Oral surgery may be performed for treating badly broken, impacted, or missing teeth, bone loss in your jaw, extensive tooth decay, temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD), oral cancer, and benign oral pathology.
Let’s look at the different types of oral surgery:
1. Dental bone graft — In the location of a missing tooth, bone deterioration can occur in the jaw since there are no roots to stimulate the nerves without which the brain doesn’t signal the body to send the necessary nutrients to keep your jaw healthy. Advanced gum disease can also cause bone loss around the teeth.
A dental bone graft provides a solid foundation by restoring the volume and density of your jaw bone so that it can accept firm dental implants.
2. Tooth extraction — Tooth extraction or tooth removal is the most common type of oral surgery which is performed when people experience severe tooth decay, dental trauma, periodontitis (gum disease), wisdom teeth complications, and other such issues.
Tooth extractions can also be performed for preparing you for dentures and prosthetic devices. Generally, the primary goal of a dentist is to save natural teeth as much as possible unless tooth extraction is necessary to preserve overall oral health.
3. Orthognathic surgery — Orthognathic surgery or corrective jaw surgery is performed for restoring chewing function, treating facial imbalances, and correcting misalignments that are caused due to skeletal abnormalities of your jaw bones. It can also be used to relieve the pain caused due to TMJ dysfunction.
4. Periodontal surgery — Periodontal surgery is required when a patient suffers from severe or moderate periodontitis. During the procedure, the surgeon will clean the teeth roots and flush away the accumulated bacteria and plaque under your gums. To perform this procedure, they have to make incisions along the gum line and move back the tissue temporarily away from your teeth.
The patient may also require a gum graft if the disease causes gum recession. Generally, it involves the use of donor tissue from the roof of your mouth to reinforce tissue loss.
4. Dental implants — Dental implants are small threaded posts that are made from medical-grade zirconia or titanium to serve as long-term and reliable tooth replacement options. Dental crowns are embedded into the jaw to replace missing tooth roots and can be restored with dental bridges, dental crowns, and dentures when they heal properly.
At Iqaluit Dental Clinic, we believe it is important to be aware of the risks of oral surgery before you opt for it. Some of the complications and issues that oral surgery can cause include numbness, injury to adjacent teeth, sinus problems, infection, dry sockets, and more. Thus, it is important to thoroughly consult with your dentist and follow their recommended post-operative guidelines to minimize the risk of side effects.
