Build Trust and Win in the Marketplace

Whenever we hear the word trust, what comes to mind is a virtue meant for some religious or a social value to cement loyalty in relationships. It is rarely connected to the world of business.

But how do you feel when you discover a butcher recalibrated his scales? Will you continue doing business with such a fellow?

When trust is in place, it is a force that binds relationships. It helps organisations to work smoothly.

Trust is a challenging virtue to define, but we know when it's lost.

Warren Buffet, a leader and business mogul, aptly captured the essence of trust in business with this quote, '"trust is like the air we breathe -when it's present, nobody notices. When it's absent, everyone notices."

The building blocks of TRUST

Some actions leaders can take in instilling trust is captured in the acrostic TRUSTED as;

Truthfulness
Leaders should be truthful and open in their communication, ensuring no hidden agenda which may suggest distrust. They should be true to their word and strive to fulfil their commitments to encourage trusting relationships with team members.

Responsibility
Holding yourself responsible for all outcomes suggests authentic leadership. Provide the time, space and resources needed to accomplish their tasks, then move out of the way expecting the team to act responsibly.

Unity of purpose
What is your intention as a team leader? Is your purpose in alignment with your actions?
There should be no other overriding expectations apart from completing the mission.
Congruency between what is said and what is being implemented is essential. When the team knows they are on the same boat with you on the mission, trust flourishes.

Steadfastness
Persistence in following set targets is a pre-condition for someone to be taken seriously. When leaders are professionally competent and ensure tasks are completed and turned in when due, it allays fears among team members.

Thankfulness
When we express gratitude toward team members for their efforts, we not only motivate them to do more but also signal to them that they are trusted.

Dependability
A leader who commits to his words and follows through with actions inspire trust

If we are to improve the relationships in the team positively and improve productivity, trust is a necessity; it's up to us as leaders to establish it as a culture among our people and in the organisation.
