Growing Fruit Trees in Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is an ideal location to plant a variety of fruit trees and orchards. In general, the south-central and southeastern regions of the state are ideal for stone fruits, such as cherries, peaches, nectarines, and apricots.

Because these tree varieties are susceptible to frigid winter temperatures and spring frosts, they do not consistently bear fruit when planted in the northern two-thirds of the state.

Plums and cherries have a somewhat hardier constitution and can thrive where the winter temperatures stay above 20 degrees. Pears and apples are even hardier and are suitable for all but the coldest areas of Pennsylvania.

One key to a thriving orchard is that it should be situated on elevated or hilly land, which allows cold air to drain when frosts occur. In addition, channels should be created in thick nearby woods to allow cold air to move down and away from the fruit trees.
