The Way of the Wrestler p.III

Weight Classes

A certain wrestler said that one should lose as much weight as possible in order to compete in the lowest weigh class possible. Yet another wrestler said that one should gain as much muscle as possible, in order to move up weight classes and be strong and full while others are starving and weak. They were both wrong. A true wrestler should look at the competition, and pick a relatively close weight class to compete in. This decision should be made based upon the needs of the team to fill weight classes and the chances of that wrestler to win a state championship at that weight. Once the weight class has been determined there are two paths.

First, if the weight class is heavier, then the wrestler should work out diligently and emphasize eating protein, healthy carbs, fruits and vegetables to add healthy muscle. Gaining weight by eating junk food, or adding fat is the mark of a lack of discipline.

Secondly, if the weight class is lower then the wrestler currently weighs, the wrestler must be disciplined in his calorie intake. He must only eat the most essential foods and emphasize rigorous training in order to compact muscle and have as much strength and explosiveness packed into as little mass as possible.

This will insure that a wrestler can optimally compete in the correct weight class, in a healthy yet effective manner.
